It's unfortunate that he chose not to mention the fact that Washington Roebling could not have actually supervised the completion of the Bridge's work were it not for the tremendous efforts and brilliance of his wife Emily, who took over essentially as project manager and onsite engineer upon her husband's illness and bed confinement. She was the one who lobbied the government to allow Washington to keep his title as chief engineer despite being unable to physically direct the work.

Having said that I am fascinated by Jason's description of the American temperament, philosophy of self, our chronic self-absorption and how that narcissism undergirds all that is unique about our culture. The alarming and ever widening polarization of which we currently suffer across our civic society and our political environment -- with this unwavering faith in our self-righteous, prophetic sense of destiny -- points to a violent struggle to redefine yet again what "American" means, forgetting that it's never been a fixed state, but a fluid identity that is constantly being reinvented as our power expands, our communities become more diverse, and our wealth overwhelms the world.
